SCALE ONLY
Weight is higher.
A single-metric interpretation can easily trigger a cut, tighter food rules or renewed tracking.
CASE STUDY · LONGITUDINAL CONTEXT
A scale trend can be true — and still be the wrong reason to intervene.
From 2023 to 2026, repeated measurements captured body weight, resting heart rate, HRV and sleep. In 2026, strength training, subjective body perception and reduced food tracking added new context. The result was a different decision: observe rather than automatically cut weight.
Longitudinal here means repeated observations of the same person over time. It is not a cross-sectional comparison between different people.
THE LONG VIEW
Monthly averages below come from Runalyze-synced health data. Error bars show the within-month observed minimum and maximum, not confidence intervals. October 2026 is a fixed month-to-date snapshot through 6 October 2026, not a live-updating monthly result.
Observed ranges used for the error bars: Oct 2023 83.0–85.8 kg; Oct 2024 79.0–83.6 kg; Oct 2025 70.3–73.4 kg; Oct 2026 through 6 Oct 77.2–79.3 kg.
PHYSIOLOGY DID NOT TRACK SCALE WEIGHT ONE-TO-ONE
This panel is intentionally normalized for pattern comparison rather than a shared physical unit. Exact monthly means: resting HR 46.1, 44.8, 39.5, 40.8 bpm; HRV 57.2, 62.3, 79.5, 78.3 ms; sleep score 80.6, 81.9, 78.1, 87.7.
WHAT CHANGED IN 2026
By early 2026, monthly mean weight had fallen to roughly 72 kg. During 2026 it rose again, reaching the high-70s by autumn. Weight alone could label that as regain.
But the wider context changed too: upper-body resistance training became highly consistent, strength performance progressed, endurance remained strong, and the runner reported feeling more muscular, physically stable and mentally calmer.
At the same time, routine food tracking was deliberately stopped because it had become burdensome. The useful question therefore changed from “How do I get back to the lower number?” to “Is there enough evidence that this higher stable range is actually a problem?”
More context changed the action from automatic correction to deliberate non-intervention.
DECISION LOGIC
SCALE ONLY
A single-metric interpretation can easily trigger a cut, tighter food rules or renewed tracking.
LONGITUDINAL DATA
Compared with 2023/24, current resting HR is lower and HRV higher despite a higher body weight than the 2025 low point.
TRAINING CONTEXT
Resistance training and strength performance make added lean tissue and glycogen plausible, but not precisely quantifiable from the available data.
HUMAN OUTCOME
The runner explicitly reported liking the current body composition and feeling more stable. Those are relevant outcomes, not noise to be discarded.
STATISTICAL HYGIENE
Monthly means summarize repeated observations and reduce the temptation to overreact to individual days.
Error bars are min-to-max observed ranges. They show within-month variability. They are not standard errors, confidence intervals or uncertainty around a population parameter, because this is an N-of-1 observational time series rather than a sample of independent people.
Body-composition estimates are treated cautiously. Bioimpedance is sensitive to hydration and glycogen. It can support plausibility but not a precise claim such as “x kg of muscle were gained.”
No causal claim is made. Better sleep or HRV cannot be attributed to higher body weight, more carbohydrates, reduced tracking, strength training or any single factor from these observational data.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR PERSONAL AI
A personal AI system that sees only the latest number can amplify anxiety and unnecessary intervention. A longitudinal system can compare the current state with earlier states of the same person, preserve uncertainty, and recommend no action when the broader evidence does not justify one.
